Today we’re going to be talking about Mucuna Pruriens. It’s an extract that contains a 15% amount of L-DOPA, which is a precursor to dopamine. It has some really cool benefits and I’m going to talk about five of them today.
The first one is that it will increase your T levels. There was a study showing that in infertile subjects there was a serum increase in testosterone and LH when using Mucuna Pruriens. It also had an increase in dopamine levels in these people and reduced levels of prolactin in their body. That’s why I’ve also recommended it for helping with hair loss issues. Prolactin has a profound effect on hair loss so you want to make sure that you’re lowering your prolactin levels actively.
The second benefit of it is it can have a neuroprotective effect. It’s been used in Eastern medicine for tremors. The studies suggest that using this L-DOPA extract can help with symptoms that might be related to Parkinson’s.
The third benefit is the general increase in dopamine in the body. Dopamine is wrongly villainized and serotonin is wrongly promoted but typically most people’s imbalances are completely the opposite direction of what it should be. They usually have too much serotonin production in the body and too little dopamine production. You want to be able to reliably increase your dopamine levels and one of the best ways to do that naturally is to use Mucuna Pruriens.
The fourth benefit is there are studies showing that Mucuna Pruriens supplementation can decrease inflammation in the body. This 2010 study showed that the Mucuna Pruriens extract contains a lot of phenolic acids, phenolic compounds, and it has an antioxidant effect on the body. It basically lowers these free radicals which lowers the free radical damage that’s happening inside the body.
The last benefit of it is something people probably will never have to use but it’s interesting nonetheless. It can protect you from snake venom. There was a study showing that it did have a protective effect in settings, specifically in Nigeria. They were using Mucuna Pruriens to protect people against the negative effects of any sort of snake bite. You should go to the hospital if you get bit by a snake regardless.
